We are proud to be celebrating our 25th Anniversary of helping the needy in the SC Lowcountry, In 1991 Guenther Hecht, a Hilton Head Island resident saw how much food was being discarded by area grocery stores and asked if he could take it instead to an area food pantry. Utilizing a few volunteers and a station wagon, they started “rescuing” food. That was the beginning of SH. The organization has grown substantially over the years to meet the demands of the community but our mission has remained the same, rescuing food for those in need. Today, SH has 6 refrigerated trucks which run 6 days a week, 52 weeks a year picking up and distributing food to over 65 agencies serving the hungry in Beaufort and Jasper Counties. We feel that no one should ever have to worry about whether or not they will have enough food to eat.
SH is a 501 (C) 3 organization that serves agencies in Beaufort, Hampton and Jasper counties. Through our partnership with the Lowcountry Food Bank and Feeding America, a national hunger initiative, SH is allowed to pick up the food from area groceries. SH is not a food pantry; the food is collected and distributed the same day which ensures that the perishable food is delivered in a timely manner to those who need it with no overlap of services. This is all done by volunteers. We neither solicit nor accept funding from our agencies which allows them to use their funds on their core mission. SH prequalifies all the agencies it serves and makes sure they adhere to a strict set of rules. SH also does special pick-ups such as the Post Office Food Drive , Publix Food Drive, deliveries of USDA food and deer meat when plantations cull their herd.
