Literacy Volunteers of the Lowcountry

Who We Are

Our Values:

Literacy is a basic human right and the key to self-worth, personal fulfillment, and healthy communities.

Our Mission:

To increase adult literacy in the greaterBeaufortCountyarea by providing leadership, creating awareness, and offering quality instructional services.

Our Vision:

Literacy Volunteers of the Lowcountry envisions a community in which every adult has the literacy skills needed to be successful in the family, in the workplace, and in society.

What We Do

Since 1973 Literacy Volunteers of the Lowcountry has equipped thousands of area adults age 18 and older with the reading, writing, speaking, and math skills they need for success in the family, the workplace, and the community.

Relying on a corps of trained volunteer tutors, LVL provides one-on-one, small group, and computer-assisted instruction during daytime and evening hours at its Beaufort, Bluffton, and Hilton Head Learning Centers as well as several satellite locations. All instruction is set in the context of students' real-life needs and goals and builds on their existing skills.

Core offerings include:

  • adult basic education tutoring in reading, writing, and math
  • pre-GED/GED tutoring
  • English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)
  • WorkKeys preparation
  • citizenship preparation and
  • financial literacy.

As a result of their study, LVL students are able to find and keep better jobs, better support their children's education, better manage their and their family's health and financial affairs, and increase their involvement in the community and civic affairs.
