Hardeeville Elementary School Tutor 2nd and 3rd graders

The most effective method of improving reading for a struggling student is one-to-one tutoring. In one-to-one tutoring someone sits next to a student and reads with them, reads to them, or listens to them read until they build enough vocabulary, enough comprehension, or enough fluency to read on their own.

The most important part of tutoring is showing up consistently. your student will be looking forward to your visit. It cannot be emphasized enough how important the bond of trust is between a tutor and their student. The bond is easily lost if the student feels that you are unreliable.

The full Guided Reading tutoring session will take 20-30 minutes per student. Each tutor will work with 3 students, individually, for a total tutoring commitment of an hour and a half. Volunteers should plan to add an additional 15 to 30 minutes both before and after their tutoring for preparation and follow-up.

Guided Reading is a method of using books that gradually become more and more complex. The premise of guided reading is to work with students on their instructional level of reading. The instructional level is defined as a student being able to identify 90- 95% of the words in the book.

Tutors receive training prior to and during the tutoring program.

A background check will be conducted on each tutor.
