Ridgeland Elementary School Tutor First GradersTutor with "Reading Power".... To become a tutor, one should have a love of children, the ability to read and write , and hopefully, a sense of humor. Each tutor devotes 3 hours on one day every week tutoring three to four children one on one, in 30 minute sessions filling in a lesson plan sheet for the following day's tutor, and participating in on-going training. Tutors are encouraged to treat this experience as a job, not as optional volunteer work. They need to attend consistently if the children are to receive quality teaching. (for the occasional absence, a system of trading days with other tutors permits some flexibility in one's schedule) Training will be provided by a certified teacher and literacy specialist. Two half days of training will occur in mid- October. Volunteers will get into the Reading Power classrooms with their students by the third week in October. A background check will be conducted on each tutor. Agency: United Way of the Lowcountry
